The Great Debate: Are fruits and vegetables expensive?

Scheduled for Wednesday, April 23 at 16:30 p.m. with Marie-Amandine Stévenin, President of UFC-Que-Choisir, we are pleased to announce the presence of Christel Teyssedre, President of Saveurs Commerce et Primeur in the Lot.

"Fruit and vegetable prices are skyrocketing": the topic of fruit and vegetable prices regularly makes headlines. But what are we talking about? What would be the "fair price" for a kilo of tomatoes or apples? Can we even talk about fruit and vegetable prices when a single shelf or stall offers around fifty different products? Furthermore, seasonality, climate, and the abundance or scarcity of a harvest cause prices to fluctuate, sometimes daily. We need to provide consumers with benchmarks, to give "meaning" to fruit and vegetable prices.

Climate change: towards the relocation of some production to France?

The Fruit and Vegetable Sector Sovereignty PlanThe plan, put in place by the government in March 2023, aims to gain 5 points of sovereignty in fruits and vegetables by 2030, and 10 points by 2035.

Between 2000 and 2020, the self-sufficiency rate France's production of fresh fruits and vegetables fell from 64% to 50%. This trend resulted from a decrease in production areas and the number of farms, combined with increased competition from neighboring producing countries, particularly Morocco, Spain, and Italy.

Could the worsening effects of climate change in the countries around the Mediterranean present an opportunity for France to relocate some fruit and vegetable production, or even to allow the development of new sectors not currently present in metropolitan France?
