Juggling climate, health and environmental risks, the agricultural sector is questioning the viability of its businesses and the sustainability of its sector.
Yes, production is becoming increasingly difficult. No, agricultural risk management tools, mostly used as a remedial measure or requiring too much investment to be adopted, will not, on their own, resolve the accumulating crises. Will we leave this risk to be borne solely by producers, on the front line, pressured to produce "better" while citizens-consumers become indifferent, accustomed to cheap, readily available, and abundant food? What's more, high-quality food: standardization has accustomed these same consumers to beautiful, flawless, uniformly sized fruits and vegetables. What will the future hold? How can we better prevent this risk to avoid a fatal disconnect between production and consumption levels? How can we make it a genuine sector-wide issue, concerning both producers and their distribution partners? How can we better raise awareness and involve consumers in the changes to come?
